Mother’s Day: Holding Space for Everyone
Holidays can be a source of comfort but can also be a source of pain.
There are some of us who still have their mothers, there are some of us who have lost their mothers (either because they have passed away or because that relationship has been severed), and there are some of us who have an uncertain relationship with our mothers.
On the other hand, there are people who are mothers, want to become mothers, or who are mothers who have lost their child (because they have passed away, been removed from their custody, or that relationship is severed). Some of us are mothers to human babies, and some of us are mothers to animal babies.
To the mothers who are with us: thank you for your strength, your care, and the countless ways you shape our lives.
To those yearning to be mothers, those navigating loss, and those who grieve the absence of a mother’s presence: your experience matters. This day may feel heavy, complicated, or even isolating. You’re not alone.
To those whose mothers live on in memory, whose arms are emptier than their hearts, and whose grief rises with the blooming of spring: today, we see you too.
Whether this day brings joy, sorrow, or something in between, may we hold space for all of it. May we be gentle with ourselves and each other.
Happy Mother’s Day.
